Blizzards and tornado warnings

The northern Plains have it rough tonight, dealing with blizzard conditions in the Dakotas, Montana, and Wyoming. The SPC issued a Mesoscale Discussion concerning many reports of near-zero visibility. Wind gusts over 40 mph and heavy snow are not a good mix. Below is the MD graphic from the NWS.

On another note, this afternoon a tornado warning was issued for the Hawaiian island of Kauai. This was not a waterspout— it was radar-indicated rotation that prompted the warning. No tornado touched down, but this is a rare occurrence for Hawaii indeed. Below is the text warning from the NWS office in Honolulu:

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN HONOLULU HAS ISSUED A * TORNADO WARNING FOR... THE ISLAND OF KAUAI IN KAUAI COUNTY * UNTIL 115 PM HST * AT 1234 PM HST...RADAR INDICATED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CAPABLE OF PRODUCING A TORNADO 7 MILES SOUTHWEST OF KAUMAKANI...OR 24 MILES WEST OF LIHUE...MOVING TO THE NORTHEAST AT 35 MPH. * THE TORNADO WILL BE NEAR... KEKAHA AT 1245 PM HST WAIMEA AT 1250 PM HST HANAPEPE AT 1250 PM HST 6 MILES SOUTH OF HANALEI AT 115 PM HST HEAVY RAINFALL MAY OBSCURE THIS TORNADO. TAKE COVER NOW!
